Witches’ Mirror

In reading Alkistis Dimech and Peter Grey’s The Brazen Vessel, I have found myself venturing off onto adjacent tracks from where they’ve been going in the collection. One section that especially caught my attention came in “The witches’ dance” where they write of the “contrariwise” movement of many pre-modern dances, which they associate with the […] … Continue reading…Witches’ Mirror

Schooling

I am not often lucid in my dreams, though I have been. I had a period years ago when it was more common but always intermittent, and I would often wake up very quickly after going lucid. More recently, as I’ve been going through my own Venus Retrograde experience, I have found myself engaged in […] … Continue reading…Schooling

Shadow Magic

It is a commonplace that ancient Egyptian religion and magic—and the Egyptians themselves—were “obsessed” with death and the afterlife. After all, we have all these mummies and tombs and Books about the Dead and Osiris being reborn and so on. However, while we like to distinguish the physical world from the spirit world and often […] … Continue reading…Shadow Magic

Living Enchantment

And yet, as I reflect upon these topics, I feel like conceiving of these engagements with the Unconscious-Dreaming-Spirit World from a theatrical or aesthetic perspective misses the mark. Art is the road, or a royal on-ramp. In treating enchantment and magic as “aesthetic” enterprises, I wonder how much that keeps that which is imagined or […] … Continue reading…Living Enchantment

Enchanting Tricksters

I’m going to gesture to enchanters—those who weave enchantment and faërien dramas—as tricksters and how tricksters game myths and create from myths. I’m going to gesture to how enchanters-as-tricksters use role-shifting and code-switching to out-maneuver opponents and problem situations. And I’m going to gesture to using those skills for culture jamming and magic. But I […] … Continue reading…Enchanting Tricksters

Winter Clarion

I’ve been enspiriting statues and icons. In fact, just last night I’d enspirited the final one I had planned. There’d been a couple of delays, but I finally got around to it. I try to listen to what they want for anointing oils. This one wanted road opening oil. Bam. Done. I got a distinct, […] … Continue reading…Winter Clarion

Cosmic Theater

If we want to avoid being characters in someone else’s drama, then I argue that this theatrical, shapeshifting, role-shifting perspective is one magicians, witches, and other practitioners should cultivate. We want to be the directors, writers, and volitional, agential, aware actors even as we perform different personae. Magonia and Faerie and spirits often have associations with tricksterism: however, so do witches and magicians. Fight Trickster with Trickster, I say. As we work to better know and bridge with our deeper selves, with our own spiritual realities through our enchantments and practices, and as we do so in pursuit of realizing and having—of earthing–our faërian dramas, so too should we be ready to adapt and improvise when we encounter the daimonic, Magonians, spirits of all kinds, the other, and even each other… … Continue reading…Cosmic Theater
